  • Interior care for your car — from cleaning to protection

What is interior care? It's the two-step of cleaning and then sealing the hard surfaces in your car's cockpit. First an interior cleaner lifts skin oil, dust and nicotine film off the dash and console, then a plastic dressing lays a UV shield on top. At Detailing1 you'll find the products for it from Koch-Chemie, SONAX, Meguiar's, GYEON and CarPro.

Interior care is the combination of two jobs that everyday talk likes to blur into one: cleaning and sealing the hard surfaces inside the car. The cleaner pulls skin oil, dust and smoke film out of the surface texture, then the dressing lays a protective layer with UV absorbers on top. Clean only, and you're back to square one in four weeks. Dress only, and you seal the dirt in under the coat. This category brings both halves together.

    • Two steps, two product groups. The range in this category splits into interior cleaners and plastic dressings. You'll find both halves on their own under Interior cleaners and Plastic care too — here they sit side by side, because in the workflow they belong together.
    • Concentrates pay off from the second car on. The Koch-Chemie Mehrzweckreiniger „Mzr" Universalreiniger gets diluted anywhere from 1:10 to 1:50 depending on how dirty things are. At 1:20, one litre of concentrate turns into 21 litres of cleaner — enough for around 40 full interiors.
    • Finish is a choice, not a question of quality. Matte and glossy plastic dressings don't differ in protection, only in how they throw light back. On the dash under the windscreen, gloss reflects straight into your line of sight; on a door card it bothers nobody.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: We often see interior cleaner sprayed straight onto the surface. The mist then settles on the display, the vent slats and the piano-black trim, runs into the gaps between trim and dash and dries there into a pale rim. Spray onto the microfibre instead, work top to bottom, and dust off high-gloss trim dry first with a soft brush. Loose dust otherwise acts like a grinding paste and drags in exactly the fine scratches that make the trim look dull later. A full cockpit takes you about 20 minutes this way, closer to 35 the first time round.

Cleaning and dressing are two separate jobs

Interior care starts with a distinction that blurs on the shelf: cleaners lift, dressings protect. Both in one product exists, but the result is always a compromise.

An interior cleaner works with surfactants — molecules with one end that likes water and another that likes grease. They wedge themselves between the surface and the film of dirt and lift it off, a bit like a wedge under a stuck-on sticker. What that means for you: the skin-oil film your palms leave on the wheel and gear knob over months dissolves chemically instead of by pressure. You don't have to scrub, and that's exactly what spares the grained plastic surface.

A plastic dressing does the opposite. It lays a thin film of silicone oils — or, in the silicone-free versions, of polymers — on the cleaned surface and brings UV absorbers along. Those are molecules that soak up high-energy sunlight and give it back as heat before it can crack the plastic chain. In practice: the dash greys over more slowly and doesn't go brittle. On cars that live outside, that's the difference between a cockpit still black after eight years and one that greys and splits into blotches.

The order isn't up for debate. Dressing on uncleaned plastic seals the dirt film in, and the result is a greasy surface that grabs dust again faster than before. Cleaning with no dressing after, on the other hand, takes the last of the old seal off along with the dirt and leaves the plastic bare. That's why both product groups sit next to each other in this category.

Concentrate or spray bottle decides your cost

Interior cleaners come in three formats, and the choice has more to do with how you use them than with cleaning power.

Ready-to-use spray bottles are the easiest way in. Twist the head, spray, wipe. The SONAX XTREME Auto-Innen-Reiniger Innenraumreiniger or the Meguiars „ALL SURFACE" Interior Cleaner Innenraumreiniger cover what most cars need. If you look after one car and go through the cockpit twice a year, a 500 ml bottle sees you through a whole season.

Concentrates flip the maths. The Koch-Chemie Mehrzweckreiniger „Mzr" Universalreiniger is our best-seller in this category, and that's down to its range: 1:10 for dried-in stains in the footwell, 1:50 for a quick dust pass over the dash. You buy once and mix the strength the job calls for. One litre makes a good 20 litres of cleaner at a middling dilution. For several cars in the household or for detailers, it's the only sum that adds up. On the dressing side, the Koch-Chemie Hydro Plast Care „Hpc" Kunststoffpflege Konzentrat (Wassserverdünnbar) works on the same principle.

The third format is interior detailers — light spray cleaners with a care component, meant for the round in between. They don't replace the deep clean, they hold the state. The SONAX XTREME CockpitReiniger „Matt-Effect" Innenraumpflege falls into this group. For everyday upkeep between two big cleans it's enough; for a smoked-in used car it isn't.

A word on dilution, because that's where most mistakes happen: cleaner mixed too strong doesn't clean better, it leaves residue that dries to a sticky film and grabs fresh dust within days. If a surface feels greasy after it dries, the mix was too concentrated, not too weak.

Matte or glossy — the dash decides

The most common question that reaches us on this category is the one about the right finish. It's answered by where the part sits.

On the dash, a matte product belongs. The surface lies flat under the windscreen and, with the sun low, reflects straight into your line of sight. A glossy dressing amps up exactly that reflection. The Koch-Chemie Top Star „Ts" Innenraum Kunststoffpflege is our top earner in this category and gives a satin-matte finish that leaves the grain of the plastic on show rather than burying it under gloss.

On door cards, the centre console and in the footwell, reflection plays no part. There it can shine, if you like the look. The Koch-Chemie Cockpit-Super-Pflege „Csp" Kunststoffpflege (Glänzend) serves that taste without cutting corners on protection.

A special case is badly faded plastic. Once black trim has already gone blotchy grey, dressing alone won't save it — the dye is washed out, and no film in the world brings it back. Here the Koch-Chemie Kunststoff-Färber „Kfs" Schwarz Kunststoffpflege works with pigments instead of oil, so it puts colour back rather than just lifting what's there. That's honestly cosmetics with a limited lifespan, and the only alternative to swapping the part.

One thing the scene argues about regularly is silicone oil. It glides nicely, gives a rich look straight away, and over time creeps as a fine film onto the inside of the windscreen, where it smears in backlight. Silicone-free dressings work with polymers instead and build the protection up more slowly. If foggy glass gets on your nerves, that's the reason to reach for the silicone-free version.

If you want the protection to last longer than a handful of washes, reach for a plastic sealant. The SONAX XTREME Ceramic Kunststoff-Versiegelung bonds chemically to the surface instead of just sitting on top. It takes more effort to lay down, but the durability is many times that of the classic dressings.

Spray onto the cloth, never onto the surface

The run for a full interior has four steps and, with practice, takes about 20 minutes — closer to 35 on the first pass. That gap is normal and no sign you're doing anything wrong.

Step one is dry. Loose dust comes off before any cleaner comes into play — with a soft brush out of the vent slats, with the vacuum out of the gaps. The reason is mechanical: damp dust turns into grinding paste and drags fine scratches across high-gloss trim that then stay visible as a dull haze.

Step two is the clean. Cleaner onto the microfibre, not onto the surface. On displays and instrument screens that holds without exception; there you're better off with a dedicated product like the THE FINISHER „DisplayExpert" Displayreiniger, because anti-glare coatings react badly to a lot of all-purpose cleaners. Work top to bottom so loosened dirt doesn't run onto surfaces you've already cleaned.

Step three is drying. A second, clean, dry cloth takes up the leftover moisture. Skip this step and you get streaks — not because of the product, but because evaporating moisture leaves the loosened residue behind unevenly.

Step four is the dressing, and thin at that. A common mistake is the generous dose, on the assumption that more product means more protection. In fact the plastic can only take up a limited amount; the rest stays as a film, shines unevenly and grabs dust. Lay it on with the applicator, let it soak in briefly, take the excess off with a dry cloth. On the wheel and the pedals the dressing stays off completely — there you need grip, and a silicone film on the wheel rim is a real safety risk.

Four material groups shape the range

Our range in this category sorts by material, not by brand. That's the sorting that actually helps you in the car.

For grained hard plastics — dash, door panels, pillar trim — the pairing of Mehrzweckreiniger „Mzr" and Top Star „Ts" is our best-selling combo. Both come from Koch-Chemie in Unna, are tuned to each other and cover most of the surface inside the car.

For rubber seals and soft plastics, the rubber and plastic dressings from the same line fit the bill. They bring more plasticiser replacement along, which is what makes the difference on door seals: a cared-for seal doesn't freeze fast in winter and doesn't tear.

For sensitive surfaces — piano black, displays, anti-glare coatings — we carry dedicated products like the THE FINISHER „DisplayExpert" Displayreiniger. All-purpose cleaner on these surfaces is the most common cause of lasting damage that no amount of re-polishing fixes.

For smell we carry a small group of its own. Worth knowing, because expectations often part ways here: odour removers mask or bind molecules in the air, they don't fix a source. If the smell comes from damp insulation or from the air-con, an air freshener is the wrong answer.

Starting from nothing, you need exactly four things and no more: a cleaner, a dressing, two microfibre cloths and a soft brush for the vent slats. The THE FINISHER „InsideUp" Innenraumreiniger and the Top Star „Ts" make a combination that needs no mixing and still covers both jobs cleanly.

Heavy commuter, family car and collector's piece compared

Which products make sense depends less on the car than on how it gets used.

On the heavy commuter with a company car, the load is even and high: skin oil on the wheel, dust through the vents, constant in-and-out on the sill trims. Here it pays to reach for the concentrate plus a matte dressing, with an interior detailer for the round in between every few weeks. The time stays small, the state stays constant.

On the family car the problem sits elsewhere. There it's spot, often organic mess — biscuit crumbs, spilled drinks, fingerprints at knee height. A ready-to-use spray that's always to hand in the boot beats any concentrate you have to mix first. For seat covers and carpet you'll also need products from the Textiles & Upholstery category, because different agents work there.

On the collector's or seasonal car, sealing takes the front seat. The car barely moves and stands for long stretches, often with direct sun through the glass. UV load is the real enemy here, not dirt. A plastic sealant with long durability is the fitting answer, because it holds out between the rare care sessions.

If your interior is mostly leather, you're better served in the Leather category — leather care works with re-oiling and pigment protection, not with the agents from this category. For the overview of all interior topics including textile and leather, the way in is through Interior. And if you only need one of the two halves, you'll find them under Interior cleaners and Plastic care.
