Clean your interior like a pro detailer

Grimy plastics, a haze on the windscreen, stains in the upholstery: the interior collects more dirt in a few weeks than the paint does in a year — and off-the-shelf cleaners from the DIY store often just push it around. That's why pro detailers do it differently. They mix their own cleaners from concentrate, dosed for the job: mild for the door cards, strong for a filthy footwell.

That's exactly the system inside this kit. You choose your all-purpose concentrate, your specialist concentrate with matching accessories and your spray system — and from then on you mix every cleaner fresh, at the strength the surface needs.

What we see day-to-day: most people mix their concentrates too strong. We regularly get questions about streaks on plastic trim, and almost every time the mix was twice as strong as it needed to be. Start with the weakest dilution in the table below and work your way up — one litre of Koch-Chemie Green Star "Gs" at 1:10 already makes eleven litres of ready-to-use cleaner at about 0.64 EUR per litre.

How the concentrate system works

Concentrate in the spray bottle, top up with water, and your interior cleaner is ready. Green Star "Gs" is the classic all-purpose cleaner here: alkaline at pH 12.5 — that high alkalinity saponifies grease and breaks down the ground-in grime from hands that neutral cleaners leave behind. For you, that means the steering wheel rim, door handles and gear lever feel grippy again instead of shiny and greasy. If you'd rather work with SONAX, TUGA Chemie, GYEON or Meguiar's, grab PROFILINE MultiStar, Teufels-Reiniger®, Q²M APC or the HEAVY DUTY Multi Purpose Cleaner — all four are genuine concentrates with their own dilution range. PROFILINE MultiStar comes from SONAX's pro line and covers the same 1:5 to 1:50 span as Green Star; Teufels-Reiniger® is the strongest in the line-up and can go all the way to 1:1 on caked-on floor mats; Q²M APC is the only one with the dosing scale printed right on the bottle — handy if you work without a dosing cap. And the HEAVY DUTY Multi Purpose Cleaner is the pick if your shelf is already done out in Meguiar's livery anyway.

When it comes to the cleaning itself, stick to the detailer's order, top to bottom: headliner edges and sun visors first, then the dashboard and console, then the door cards, and footwells and mats last. That way loosened dirt never falls onto surfaces you've already cleaned. On textured plastic, spray onto the surface and follow up with the cloth; on delicate areas like screens and piano black, spray onto the cloth, never directly — overspray into air vents and switches is the most common beginner's mistake we see in customer questions.

Glass and fabric are the second stage: Glas Star "Gla" goes on neat or mixed up to 1:3 with distilled water and pulls the nicotine and plasticiser film off the inside of the glass, and the included Pro Glass Towel 230GSM takes it off streak-free. COLOURLOCK "Pol Star" covers fabric, leather and Alcantara — foamed up in the Foamer Bottle, it sits on top of the upholstery instead of soaking in, and you work the foam in with very little moisture. That way the seats are dry again within an hour.

On the inside of the glass, the two-towel method pays off: with the first towel you apply the Glas Star mix and break down the film, then the second, dry Pro Glass Towel buffs it off — the 230GSM weave is deliberately kept flat so it leaves no lint behind where deep-pile microfibre would let you down. One pass across, one pass up and down, and you'll see straight away which side of the glass the haze is still on.

Where concentrates hit their limits

Before a new mix goes on a large area, test it on an inconspicuous spot first — under the seat, on the B-pillar trim. Older plastics and re-dyed leather in particular are more sensitive than the label would have you believe. On Alcantara, always work with the weakest Pol Star foam and no rubbing: dab, let it dwell, lift it off — otherwise the pile mats.

With its blend of surfactants, the "Mzr" multi-purpose cleaner even shifts biro and grease — but it's off-limits on soft-touch surfaces, leather and painted trim, where it attacks the coating. On those surfaces, use the mild Green Star mix or Pol Star. And concentrates don't replace a dressing: after cleaning, the plastic is clean and matt — if you want a cared-for finish, follow up with a trim dressing. Dressings are deliberately left out of this kit: it's the cleaning foundation, not the full beauty treatment.

The right spray system for your mix

A concentrate is only as good as the bottle it comes out of. The PROFILINE Sprayboy is the tough, pro-grade basic with a chemical-resistant seal — SONAX prints the right dilutions for its own pro cleaners right on the label. Let's run the numbers once, because this is the heart of the system: a ready-to-use cleaner costs around 10 EUR per 500-millilitre bottle — 20 EUR per litre. One litre of Green Star "Gs" costs 6.99 EUR and makes eleven litres of ready-to-use cleaner at 1:10, so 64 cents per litre. Even with the spray bottle and dosing cap, the kit has paid for itself after the first three litres you mix — and from then on you're cleaning for a fraction of what any ready-made bottle costs.

A shelf of concentrates replaces a dozen ready-made sprays — plus the one habit no manufacturer prints on the label: mark every mixing bottle with the product and the dilution. Otherwise, two weeks later nobody knows what's in which bottle, and that's exactly when the strong mix ends up on the delicate surface.

How do the brands' all-purpose concentrates differ?

All five are genuine concentrates for interior cleaning. Green Star "Gs" and MultiStar are the alkaline classics (1:5–1:50), Teufels-Reiniger® has a strong range down to 1:1, Q²M APC has a dosing scale on the bottle, and Meguiar's HEAVY DUTY sits at 1:4–1:20. Pick the brand you already work with.

Which dilution do I use on which surface?

As a rule of thumb: 1:20 to 1:50 for the cockpit and door cards, 1:10 for footwells and high-wear surfaces, and stronger only for stubborn dirt. Always start with the weakest mix — topping up the dose is quicker than wiping off streaks.

Does the Dosing Cap fit every bottle in the kit?

The "Dosing Cap" fits the Koch-Chemie 1-litre bottles (270 mm). GYEON Q²M APC has its own dosing scale on the bottle; with SONAX, TUGA Chemie and Meguiar's you measure with the cap or a measuring jug.

Is one spray bottle enough for both concentrates?

The proper way is one mixing bottle per concentrate, so the mixes never cross-contaminate. To get started with the kit, one spray system is enough — Glas Star "Gla" often gets sprayed straight onto the towel anyway. You can add a second bottle at any time.

Can I also clean leather and delicate surfaces with it?

For fabric, leather and Alcantara, the kit has COLOURLOCK "Pol Star" — applied as foam from the Foamer Bottle. Don't use the "Mzr" multi-purpose cleaner on soft-touch surfaces, leather or painted trim.

Store concentrates cool, closed and upright — use up mixed solutions within a few days and flush the sprayer through with clean water afterwards, otherwise surfactants gum up the nozzle. Label mixing bottles with the product and dilution. Never use alkaline cleaners like Green Star "Gs" on hot surfaces, and never undiluted on soft-touch surfaces; after cleaning upholstery, air the car out well so the remaining moisture can escape from the seats and carpet.
