What is the SONAX WheelBeast? An acid-free wheel cleaner with a color-changing indicator that chemically dissolves iron particles on steel, aluminum, and chrome wheels — including TPMS approval. Not suitable for freshly repainted wheels, burnt-in tar, or hot surfaces directly after driving.

SONAX WheelBeast is an acid-free wheel cleaner from SONAX that works with a chemical indicator: The gel changes from transparent to reddish-purple within 60 to 90 seconds as soon as it reacts with iron particles from brake dust. The active ingredient, based on thioglycolate, binds the trivalent iron compounds and converts them into water-soluble complexes, which can then be rinsed off without leaving any residue.

The wheel surface remains unaffected during this process because the cleaner reacts chemically only with iron and not with clear coat, powder coating, or anodized aluminum. This fundamentally differentiates WheelBeast from acid-based cleaners, which work faster but can leave irreversible etching marks on polished aluminum or chrome. This is particularly critical for OEM wheels with diamond cut finishes, where any minimal material abrasion remains permanently visible and cannot be polished out.

• Color change as a real-time diagnostic. The reddish-purple discoloration not only shows you whether you have applied it comprehensively, but also where brake dust is still lodged in pores and spoke edges that you can't see with the naked eye. After 3 minutes, you'll know which areas need a second pass, and you won't have to check the cloth afterwards to see if the wheel is really contamination-free.
• One product for your entire fleet. WheelBeast is approved for steel, alloy, painted, chrome, polished, and matte wheels — and is fully TPMS-compatible. Detailing1 Pro Tip: The most common mistake with WheelBeast is applying it to wet or hot wheels. Wet wheels dilute the gel by 30 to 50 percent — the dwell time is then not sufficient for the thioglycolate reaction to complete. Hot wheels after driving cause the gel to dry in seconds, and you end up scrubbing off cleaner residue instead of brake dust. Wait at least 15 minutes between parking and cleaning — this is the cheapest quality improvement you can give yourself.

Cold wheel. 3 minutes. A second pass.

Shake the bottle, open the spray nozzle by twisting, apply the cleaner generously and evenly from 15 to 20 centimeters away to the dry, cold wheel. Start at the bottom and work your way up, because although the gel adheres vertically, it will still run off after some time and runoff marks would dry prematurely. For each wheel, estimate roughly 40 to 60 milliliters — at the upper end for 17-inch wheels with complex spoke fronts, less is sufficient for simple 15-inch steel wheels.

After 60 to 90 seconds, the color change begins. The full dwell time is 3 minutes, a maximum of 5 minutes — after that, the thioglycolate is saturated and no longer reacts. A common misconception in practice: leaving the cleaner on for 10 minutes does not result in any additional effect.

On the contrary, the gel starts to dry and leaves cleaner residues, which mean extra effort when rinsing. A second short pass on the still-wet wheel is significantly more effective than an extended dwell time on the first — this is the most important operating insight that the manufacturer does not mention on the back.

Finally, rinse with a strong stream of water or a pressure washer from top to bottom until no reddish haze runs off. For heavy brake dust on complex spoke structures, a soft wheel brush helps distribute the gel between the spokes — not for scrubbing, but just for touching up and evenly distributing the second layer. In winter, when the ambient temperature is below 10 °C, extend the dwell time generously up to the 5-minute mark, because the reaction speed of thioglycolate decreases with temperature. Conversely, above 25 °C: work shorter and rinse faster before the gel dries.

Thioglycolate dissolves iron. Not bitumen.

On regular brake dust from road vehicles, WheelBeast works very reliably — that is its core area. The color change also tells you what kind of contamination is present: iron particles react reddish-purple, organic contaminants such as tar, bitumen, or oil do not discolor at all. So after three minutes, you know whether you even have the right tool in your hand, or whether you should switch to an APC or a tar remover instead — a diagnostic step that no acid-based cleaner provides.

As a secondary application, WheelBeast also works as a fallout remover on paint. After parking lots next to railway tracks, industrial areas, or construction sites, fine iron particles from brake dust and rail abrasion accumulate on the hood, roof, and trunk — often not visible to the naked eye, but immediately noticeable as a "sandy" feel during the clay bar routine.

On such surfaces, generously spray WheelBeast, wait for the color change, and rinse off within 5 minutes. The clear coat remains untouched as long as you do not exceed the dwell time and the surface was not previously in direct sunlight. The clear limitations: burnt-in tar and bitumen stains do not react chemically with thioglycolate — for that, you need a solvent-based tar remover. And with extremely burnt-in brake dust on racing brake systems or after months of neglect, a single pass may reach its limits. If you need material compatibility on all surfaces, stick with WheelBeast and plan for two passes. For the regular caretaker, not for extreme cases.

WheelBeast is the right choice for anyone who maintains their wheels every one to three weeks and doesn't want to search between three different cleaners in the garage every time they change vehicles. You grab it from the shelf, spray it on, rinse it off — done. This also makes it the logical entry-level product for detailing beginners who have no experience with material compatibility and cannot afford a wrong product choice on polished alloys.

WheelBeast is particularly strong in two- or three-car households and in fleet use, where winter steel stands next to summer alloy and OEM diamond cut next to a painted spare wheel. One cleaner for all wheel types means in practice: no risk of mix-ups, no product changes between two cars, no discussion about whether the aggressive alkaline cleaner has now left marks on the chrome edge.

However, WheelBeast is less suitable if you only clean your vehicle thoroughly once or twice a year and the brake dust has already been baked on for several months. In that case, even a second pass will not remove everything, because iron oxide has already worked its way into the wheel pores and requires mechanical post-processing.

For a complete solution, combine WheelBeast with tire care as a finish: first chemically decontaminate the wheel, then dress the tire. This is the complete wheel workflow in two steps and under 15 minutes per vehicle — provided you stick with it every two weeks and the brake dust doesn't even get a chance to embed itself.

Regarding the choice of container size: The 1-liter spray bottle is the comfortable entry for a single vehicle and comes completely ready to use with an attachable spray nozzle. The 5-liter canister pays off from the second vehicle or at the latest in continuous commercial operation, because the price per liter is noticeably lower and you simply decant the gel into an empty spray bottle. Store frost-free between 5 and 30 °C and use within 24 months of opening — this ensures the color change remains reliably active.

Application of SONAX FelgenBeast

Cold rim, three minutes, second pass

Shake the bottle well before use and open the spray nozzle by twisting it. Apply the FelgenBeast generously and evenly to the cold, dry rim from a distance of 15 to 20 centimeters – start at the bottom and work your way up. This prevents streaks from appearing prematurely and ensures the gel is evenly distributed over the spokes. For each wheel, calculate 40 to 60 milliliters; for 17-inch rims with complex spoke designs, aim for the higher end of this range.

After 60 to 90 seconds, the color change from transparent to reddish-violet will begin. This is the thioglycolate active ingredient, which binds iron(III) compounds from brake dust and converts them into water-soluble complexes. The full reaction time is three minutes, with a maximum of five. Waiting longer is pointless – after that, the active ingredient is saturated and will no longer react.

For the gaps between the spokes and the inside of the rim, use a soft rim brush from our rim cleaner category – not for scrubbing, but to distribute the gel evenly and reach intricate areas. A quick second pass on the still-damp rim is always more effective than an extended reaction time on the first pass.

Finally, rinse with a high-pressure cleaner or a strong stream of water from top to bottom until no more reddish residue runs off. To complete the wheel workflow, apply a tire care product to the dry tire.

Notes: FelgenBeast reliably removes regular brake dust, but not burnt-in brake dust after months of neglect – for that, you'll need the more aggressive SONAX PROFILINE Rim Cleaner, which, however, is only suitable for painted, chrome-plated, and powder-coated rims. Wait at least 15 minutes between parking and cleaning to allow the brake disc and rim to cool down – on hot rims, the gel dries in seconds. Do not use in direct sunlight or at temperatures above 25 °C; below 10 °C, extend the reaction time to the 5-minute mark, as the reaction speed decreases with temperature. Not suitable for repainted rims that are no longer originally powder-coated. Store frost-free between 5 and 30 °C; once opened, it is stable for 24 months. Close the spray head after use to prevent the nozzle from drying out.
