Cleaning, sealing, and caring for rims – the SONAX XTREME Rim Care System
What does SONAX XTREME Rim Care entail? A coordinated three-stage system consisting of an acid-free intensive cleaner, ceramic detailer, and long-lasting sealant – for rims that look freshly mounted after every wash.
Anyone who wants rims not only clean but permanently protected needs more than just a single cleaner. This is precisely where SONAX XTREME Rim Care comes in: Instead of stringing together isolated products, SONAX has developed a sophisticated system where cleaning, care, and protection intertwine. For over 50 years, the manufacturer from Neuburg an der Donau has been delivering professional standards for car care, which are first tested in motorsport and professional detailing shops before finding their way to detailers and private users. The XTREME line is the segment in which SONAX bundles its most advanced formulas – and this is particularly evident in rim care.
The XTREME Rim Cleaner PLUS dissolves baked-on brake dust and rust film acid-free and shows where it's working with a color change. The XTREME Ceramic Tire+Rim Detailer brings shine and beading effect between basic cleanings while also caring for the tires. And the XTREME Rim Protection Sealant applies an invisible hybrid-silicate protective layer that prevents brake dust from baking on for up to six weeks. All three products are coordinated, RDKS-compatible, and suitable for all common rim types – from aluminum to chrome to steel.
- Three stages, one goal: less effort with every rim wash. The cleaner removes what has accumulated. The detailer refreshes the protection between washes. The sealant ensures that brake dust doesn't bake on in the first place. In practice, this means you need the cleaner less often because the sealant keeps dirt on the surface – and when you do clean, it goes much faster. Instead of stubborn scrubbing, a quick spray and rinse are often enough, because the sealant prevents particles from baking into the clear coat layer.
- Acid-free and material-friendly on all rim types. Many rim cleaners use acid, which can attack clear coats and anodized layers with regular use – particularly problematic for high-quality forged rims or two-tone painted designs. The XTREME Rim Cleaner PLUS uses an alkaline active ingredient with a color indicator instead: You can see where iron particles are dissolving by the reddish-violet color change, and you know exactly when to rinse. No guesswork, no overreaction on sensitive surfaces. For polished rims and repainted rims, we still recommend testing in an inconspicuous area beforehand.
- Ceramic technology for long-lasting protection and shine. The Ceramic Tire+Rim Detailer penetrates the surface and leaves a streak-free protective layer with a beading effect. The result: Water and dirt bead off, light contamination can be removed without re-cleaning, and tires regain a satin-matte finish – without sticky residues that leave streaks in the next rain. Particularly practical: With regular use, the detailer also eliminates brown discolorations on the tire sidewalls caused by UV radiation and ozone. These brown stains are not dirt in the classic sense, but a chemical reaction of the tire plasticizers with the ambient air – the detailer contains ingredients that reverse this process and restore a clean, well-maintained black to the rubber.
Detailing1's practical tip: The best sequence for your rim care weekend: First, loosen stubborn brake dust with the XTREME Rim Cleaner PLUS (3–5 min. dwell time on a cold, dry rim). Then rinse thoroughly, completely dry the rim, and seal it with the Rim Protection Sealant. Between basic cleanings, spray on the Ceramic Tire+Rim Detailer every 1–2 weeks – this keeps the beading effect active and saves you the next intensive cleaning. The most common mistake we see: Applying the sealant to a still-damp rim. Then the silicate film does not adhere properly and flakes off after a few days. Take the extra minute to dry – it's worth it.
Acid-free active indicator technology – what distinguishes SONAX XTREME Rim Care
The key difference between SONAX XTREME Rim Care and many competing products lies in the combination of chemical cleaning power and visual control. The XTREME Rim Cleaner PLUS uses an alkaline active foam that chemically dissolves iron particles and rust film and indicates the cleaning progress via a visible color change. The principle behind it: The active ingredient reacts with iron ions from brake dust and rust film, forming a reddish-violet complex. Where the color is intense, there is a particularly high amount of metallic dirt. Where the cleaner remains transparent, the rim is already clean. This is not only visually impressive – it has a real benefit: You see in real-time whether the cleaner still needs to work or whether you can already rinse. This prevents two typical mistakes: rinsing too early, leaving brake dust behind, and unnecessarily long dwell times, which can lead to staining on sensitive surfaces.
The foam consistency plays an important role here. The active foam also adheres to vertical spokes and in the rim bed instead of immediately running off. Compared to thin spray products, this extends the effective dwell time in the areas where the dirt is most stubborn. SONAX specifies a dwell time of 3 to 5 minutes – in practice, for regularly maintained rims, 2 to 3 minutes are often sufficient, while heavily neglected rims can tolerate a second application.
Many overlook one aspect when it comes to acid-free: It's not just about the moment of cleaning, but about the long-term consequences. Acidic cleaners can thin the clear coat layer of the rim with repeated application – an effect that only becomes apparent after months, when the rim suddenly looks dull or develops oxidation spots. Alkaline cleaners like the XTREME Rim Cleaner PLUS do not attack the clear coat, which makes a particular difference for high-quality alloy wheels, two-tone painted designs, or matted surfaces.
The second core technology is in the sealant chemistry. Both the Ceramic Tire+Rim Detailer and the Rim Protection Sealant rely on inorganic protective layers that bond with the rim surface at a molecular level. The Rim Protection Sealant creates a hybrid-silicate film – a combination of glass-hard silicate and organic components that form a stable, weather-resistant network. This is not a wax layer that disappears after two washes or the first heavy rain. Instead, it's a transparent barrier that is water, dirt, and salt-repellent and, according to SONAX, lasts up to six weeks. In our experience, this is realistic if the sealant is applied correctly – meaning on a truly clean, dry rim with at least an hour of curing time without touching.
XTREME Rim Cleaner, Ceramic Detailer, or Sealant – which product do you need when?
The three products in the XTREME Rim Care System cover different situations, and not everyone needs all three at once. Which product is right for you depends on your care habits, your vehicle, and your demands.
The XTREME Rim Cleaner PLUS is the workhorse for basic cleaning: baked-on brake dust, rust film, oil residues from the chassis, road grime after winter – everything that has accumulated over days and weeks. It is available in three sizes: 500 ml for occasional users, 750 ml as a standard spray bottle, and 5 liters as a refill canister for frequent users and detailing shops. The large size is worthwhile if you care for more than one vehicle or clean every two weeks – you not only save money per liter but also on constant reordering. A set of rims consumes between 50 and 100 ml per cleaning, depending on the degree of soiling, meaning the 750 ml bottle is sufficient for about 7 to 15 complete cleanings.
The XTREME Rim Protection Sealant is used after basic cleaning and is particularly useful if you want to reduce cleaning effort in the long term. The 250 ml spray bottle is sufficient for several complete applications on a set of rims – the sealant is applied thinly, allowed to dry briefly, and then polished with a clean microfiber cloth. Important: Allow at least one hour of curing time before the rim is subjected to stress again. It is ideal to apply the sealant in the evening and leave the vehicle overnight. The sealant is suitable for all common rim surfaces and is particularly useful for vehicles with a high amount of brake dust – for example, vehicles with sports brakes or heavy SUVs, whose brakes are subjected to greater stress due to the high vehicle weight.
The XTREME Ceramic Tire+Rim Detailer is the quick in-between product. It refreshes sealant and shine, simultaneously cares for the tire sidewalls with a satin-matte finish, and removes light dirt without water. Ideal after a highway drive, as a quick fix before a meeting, or as a weekly care routine between basic cleanings. Thanks to the ceramic component, it doesn't just leave shine, but builds up the protective layer a little with each application – a useful addition to the sealant, but also usable on its own if you want to forego full sealing. The 750 ml bottle is sufficient for numerous applications, as only a few sprays per rim are needed.
Cleaning and sealing rims – step by step with the XTREME System
The optimal rim care workflow always begins with cleaning and ends with protection. Here is the complete process as we recommend it in practice:
Step one is preparation. The rim must be cold and dry for basic cleaning – on hot brake discs, the cleaner evaporates too quickly, loses its effectiveness, and can leave stains. Ideally, allow at least 30 minutes after the last drive; even better is to clean in the morning before the vehicle has been moved. You should also avoid direct sunlight: UV radiation accelerates drying and shortens the dwell time.
Step two: Spray the XTREME Rim Cleaner PLUS evenly over the entire rim – including the rim bed, inner spokes, and the areas around the wheel bolts. Try not to miss any spots, as dried-on brake dust continues to oxidize and becomes harder to remove with each passing week. After 3 to 5 minutes of dwell time, you can tell by the reddish-violet color change where the cleaner has dissolved iron particles. For heavy soiling or baked-on brake dust, a soft rim brush helps to mechanically work the loosened dirt out of corners and recesses. Then rinse thoroughly with a strong stream of water or a high-pressure cleaner – from top to bottom, so that the loosened dirt does not run back onto already clean areas.
Step three is the transition to sealing. Before application, the rim must be completely dry – residual moisture is the most common reason why sealants do not adhere properly. It is best to dry with a soft microfiber cloth and, if necessary, blow out hard-to-reach areas around valve caps and wheel bolts with compressed air. Spray the Rim Protection Sealant thinly and evenly, let it dry for 30 to 60 seconds, and then polish it with a clean, dry microfiber cloth in circular motions. Do not use too much product – a thin, even layer is sufficient and spreads better than a thick application, which can leave streaks. Then allow at least one hour of curing time before moving the vehicle or exposing the rims to water.
In the weeks following the sealing, the Ceramic Tire+Rim Detailer is used. Spray on every one to two weeks, spread with a microfiber cloth or applicator, and wipe off. This refreshes the beading effect, maintains the shine, and simultaneously cares for the tire sidewalls. Every six weeks, we recommend repeating the complete cycle: basic cleaning with the Rim Cleaner PLUS, re-sealing, and then regular detailer care in between. For vehicles that are driven little or stored in the garage, the cycle can also be extended to eight to ten weeks. If you drive with winter wheels in winter, you should clean and seal the summer rims completely before storing them – this way, they will survive the storage period without corrosion marks and will be ready for use immediately in spring.
SONAX XTREME Rim Care in comparison – alternatives and honest assessment
In the German-speaking detailing market, there are strong alternatives for rim care, and each system has its strengths. An honest assessment will help you make the right decision.
The SONAX Rim Beast from the same company is a pure rim cleaner without a sealant component – it cleans a bit more aggressively than the XTREME Rim Cleaner PLUS and is particularly suitable for heavily neglected rims that haven't been cleaned for months. If you rarely clean and then need maximum power, the Rim Beast is a good choice. If, on the other hand, you clean regularly and want to minimize effort, you will benefit more from the XTREME System with its sealant component. Koch-Chemie offers a viscous, acid-free alternative with the Magic Wheel Cleaner, which adheres particularly well to vertical surfaces due to its gel consistency – ideal for complex rim designs with deep spokes and double spokes. In terms of cleaning power, both products are at a comparable level; the difference lies primarily in consistency and adhesion to vertical surfaces.
GYEON introduces another strong contender with the Q²M Iron WheelCleaner, which also works acid-free and offers a color indicator. The cleaning performance is comparable, but GYEON does not offer a comparable three-stage system – you would have to combine cleaner, sealant, and detailer from different manufacturers or lines. This is precisely where the strategic advantage of SONAX XTREME Rim Care lies: cleaner, detailer, and sealant are coordinated and build on each other. The ceramic component in the detailer and the hybrid-silicate sealant also offer a technological advantage over pure wax sealants, which last significantly shorter – typically only two to three weeks instead of six. With spray wax sealants, it should also be noted that they are immediately removed upon contact with alkaline cleaners – the XTREME Rim Protection Sealant, on the other hand, also holds up after cleaning with the in-house Rim Cleaner PLUS, which makes the combination in the system particularly sensible.
You should also be aware of the limitations of the XTREME system: For extremely baked-on brake dust that has not been cleaned for months, the XTREME Rim Cleaner PLUS may reach its limits. In such cases, a combination with mechanical cleaning (rim brush, clay pad) or pre-washing with a stronger product like the Rim Beast is advisable. You should also be fundamentally careful with repainted or damaged rims – not because of the chemistry, which is gentle enough, but because the already compromised surface reacts more sensitively to any chemical cleaner than an intact clear coat. In such cases, always test in an inconspicuous area – for example, on the inside of a spoke – and wait a few minutes before treating the entire rim.
If you're wondering whether the XTREME system is also suitable for motorcycle rims: The Rim Cleaner PLUS basically works on motorcycle rims, but the Ceramic Tire+Rim Detailer should explicitly not be used on motorcycle or bicycle tires, as the smoothing effect on the tread can impair grip. The sealant on the rims themselves, however, is unproblematic – just be sure to carefully cover or avoid the brake discs and brake pads.
Buying XTREME Rim Care – for whom is the system worthwhile?
SONAX XTREME Rim Care is not a product for every purpose – and that's a strength, not a weakness. The system is particularly worthwhile for three target groups: Firstly, for detailing enthusiasts and ambitious hobby detailers who want their rims not only clean but permanently protected. The system concept – cleaning, sealing, and caring in regular alternation – rewards consistent care with decreasing effort per wash. Once the cycle of basic cleaning and sealing has been established, you will notice that each subsequent cleaning goes significantly faster because the sealant prevents brake dust from baking on. Secondly, for owners of vehicles with a high amount of brake dust: SUVs, sports cars, vehicles with ceramic brakes or high-performance brake pads produce significantly more metallic abrasion than a small car – here, the sealant quickly pays for itself because it prevents baking on and accelerates cleaning. Thirdly, for detailing shops and workshops that want to provide their customers with a clean result with long-lasting effect – the 5-liter canister of the Rim Cleaner PLUS makes cleaning economically sensible in a professional environment.
Complementary products include the XTREME Tire Gloss Gel "Ultra Wet Look" for a rich, deep black tire finish or the XTREME Tire Gloss Spray as a quicker spray alternative. Together with the wheel care line, you have a complete wheel care system that covers rims and tires simultaneously — from cleaning to sealing to finishing. If you're unsure where to start: the XTREME Wheel Cleaner PLUS in 750 ml is the ideal introduction. If you find yourself cleaning regularly and want less effort, the Wheel Protect Sealant is the logical next step — and the Ceramic Detailer rounds out the system as convenient care for in between uses.
