Pre-Wash Without Scratch Risk with SONAX ActiFoam Energy
What is SONAX ActiFoam Energy? A pH-neutral snow foam cleaner (pH 6.5–7.5) from SONAX that chemically dissolves insect residue, road film, and light surface rust during contact-free pre-washing — without affecting wax layers, ceramic coatings, or foils. Not suitable as a standalone cleaner for burnt-in tar or heavy industrial surface rust.
SONAX ActiFoam Energy is a highly concentrated cleaning foam from the SONAX PROFILINE series that is frothed into a dense, adhesive snow foam using a foam lance on a high-pressure cleaner. The surfactant combination of anionic and non-ionic surfactants — including Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Lauramine Oxide — creates a creamy foam that adheres to vertical surfaces instead of running off immediately.
During the two to five-minute dwell time, the surfactants break the bond between dirt particles and the paintwork. Most of the contamination is rinsed off without contact. This reduces the risk of dragging dirt particles like sandpaper across the paint during subsequent washing with a mitt — the crucial advantage over immediately reaching for the wash mitt.
- Contactless pre-cleaning with stable adhesive foam. The active foam spreads evenly over the entire bodywork and adheres to vertical surfaces for two to five minutes. During this time, the surfactant formula penetrates bonded road grime, insect residue, and light brake dust. The result after rinsing: a significantly cleaner surface over which the wash mitt glides almost without resistance.
- pH-neutral and coating-safe for every wash. With a pH value of 6.5 to 7.5, ActiFoam Energy does not attack carnauba wax, ceramic coatings, polymer sealants, or foils. This fundamentally distinguishes it from alkaline pre-cleaners (pH 10–13), which shorten the lifespan of your coating with weekly use.
- One liter is enough for 15 to 20 pre-washes. With a dosage of 50 to 80 ml per foam lance fill, a pre-wash with the 1-liter container costs around 0.80 Euro. With the 5-liter canister, the price drops to about 0.42 Euro per application — more economical than most imported products in the snow foam segment.
Practical tip from Detailing1: Always apply foam to dry bodywork — not wet. Dry paint provides significantly more adhesion for the foam and noticeably extends the dwell time. At temperatures above 25 °C, work in sections and do not let the foam dry, otherwise it will leave residues that you will have to scrub off anyway. Warm water (30–40 °C) in the foam lance also enhances the cleaning effect — worth the difference in winter.
Foam Lance, Pump Sprayer, or Bucket. Three ways, one formula.
SONAX ActiFoam Energy can be used in three scenarios, each requiring different dilutions. The foam lance delivers the best results, but pump sprayers and hand washing also work.
For the foam lance on a high-pressure cleaner, mix 50 to 80 ml of concentrate per liter of total volume — this corresponds to a ratio of 1:10 to 1:20. Less water (1:10) results in denser, drier foam with longer adhesion. More water (1:20) covers larger areas but runs off vertical surfaces more quickly. Start at 1:15 and adjust as needed.
In a pump sprayer, you work with 15 to 25 ml per liter of water — ideal for targeted areas such as wheel arches, door jambs, or the front section with insect residue. As a hand wash shampoo, dissolve 50 to 80 ml in a 10-liter bucket of warm water. However, ActiFoam Energy lacks the superfatting agents that shampoos contain for wash mitt glide. For regular contact washing as a standalone shampoo, there are better options.
An often underestimated factor in dosing is water temperature. Warm water (30–40 °C) noticeably enhances the cleaning action of the surfactants — both in the foam lance and in the bucket. In winter, when working with ice-cold tap water, it's worth slightly increasing the dosage or warming the water beforehand.
The best foam quality is achieved with an adjustable foam lance at 90 to 120 bar. A cheap universal lance limits the result, not the product. To put the economy in perspective: with a dosage of 60 ml per wash via the foam lance, a pre-wash with the 5-liter canister costs about 0.42 Euro. Those who wash a vehicle once a week can use the canister for over a year.
It dissolves insect residue. Not tar.
SONAX ActiFoam Energy reliably dissolves regular road grime, dried insect residue, and light surface rust in contactless pre-washing — that's its core area. Especially in the summer months, you save yourself the separate step of using an insect remover.
It shows limitations with heavily burnt-in tar and stubborn industrial surface rust. Tar does not react to the surfactant formula — for that, you need a dedicated solvent-based tar remover. For rust on rims, an acid-based iron particle remover like SONAX FelgenBeast helps. And a snow foam fundamentally does not replace subsequent contact washing — it makes it safer by removing most of the loose particles beforehand.
What distinguishes ActiFoam Energy from simple car shampoos in the foam lance is its cleaning power in contactless operation. A shampoo is designed as a lubricant for the wash mitt, not as a standalone pre-cleaner. ActiFoam Energy was specifically formulated for use as a snow foam: the phosphate-free formula also dissolves dried insect residue without mechanical action. The typical energy drink scent is not a coincidence, but deliberately chosen as a working companion — a noticeable comfort gain compared to cleaners with biting chemical odors, especially in enclosed garages.
In practice, the following workflow has proven effective: apply ActiFoam Energy over the entire bodywork with a foam lance, from bottom to top. Use the dwell time to simultaneously treat the rims with a dedicated rim cleaner. Then rinse everything with a high-pressure cleaner — from top to bottom, so that dissolved dirt runs off. Only then apply the wash mitt with fresh shampoo water.
Even when detailing used cars or customer vehicles in a detailing shop, ActiFoam Energy is a good first step: it removes coarse dirt, shows you which areas are truly problematic, and provides a clean initial view for further assessment of the paint condition. Only after the pre-wash can you reliably assess whether a vehicle needs polishing or if a simple sealant is sufficient.
Your entry into the pre-wash routine
SONAX ActiFoam Energy positions itself between classic car shampoos and alkaline pre-cleaners. Stronger than a shampoo, yet gentle enough for weekly use on sealed and foiled vehicles. If you drive a vehicle with ceramic coating, PPF film, or carnauba wax, this product fits into your washing routine.
It is less suitable for heavily soiled workshop vehicles or the initial detailing of used cars after months of neglect — in these cases, you are better off with an alkaline cleaner with higher cleaning power, but you will have to reapply the sealant afterward.
Even those who are exclusively looking for a shampoo for contact washing and do not own a foam lance will find a dedicated car shampoo to be the better choice. ActiFoam Energy is not a universal product — it is a specialist for contactless pre-washing, and that is precisely its strength.
The concentrate comes in two sizes: as a 1-liter bottle for beginners and as a 5-liter canister for frequent washers and detailing businesses. The canister offers a cheaper price per liter and lasts for 60 to 100 pre-washes with weekly washing.
Those who previously worked with a simple all-purpose cleaner in a foam lance will immediately notice the difference in foam density and adhesion. Cheaper snow foams produce a lot of foam, but it is thin and runs off vertical surfaces within seconds. ActiFoam Energy produces a creamy, adhesive foam that remains on doors and A-pillars significantly longer.
As an introduction to the SONAX PROFILINE washing workflow, combine ActiFoam Energy with a paint cleaning after washing — and you have a pre-wash routine that protects your paint and makes it visibly cleaner before the wash mitt even comes into play. This two-step process sounds like more effort, but in the long run it saves polishing work because the rate of wash scratches measurably decreases — especially on dark colors, where even the finest swirls become immediately visible.

Frequently Asked Questions about SONAX ActiFoam Energy
What is SONAX ActiFoam Energy?
SONAX ActiFoam Energy is a highly concentrated, pH-neutral cleaning foam (pH 6.5–7.5) from the SONAX PROFILINE series. It is applied to the car body via a foam lance as a snow foam and effortlessly loosens road grime, insect residue, and light rust film – as a preliminary step to the actual hand wash with a wash mitt.
How do I properly dilute SONAX ActiFoam Energy?
For a foam lance, mix 50 to 80 ml of concentrate per liter of total mixture (ratio 1:10 to 1:20). For a pump sprayer, 15 to 25 ml per liter of water is sufficient. For hand washing, dissolve 50 to 80 ml in 10 liters of warm water. Warm water (30–40 °C) significantly enhances the cleaning power of the surfactants.
What is the difference between snow foam and car shampoo?
A snow foam like ActiFoam Energy is formulated as a standalone pre-cleaner – it loosens dirt without contact during its dwell time. A car shampoo is primarily optimized as a lubricant for the wash mitt and has significantly less cleaning power when used in a foam lance. While ActiFoam Energy can also function as a shampoo, it provides less glide than a dedicated car shampoo.
Is ActiFoam Energy suitable for ceramic coatings and wraps?
Yes. With a pH value of 6.5 to 7.5, ActiFoam Energy does not attack ceramic coatings, carnauba wax, polymer sealants, PPF films, or vinyl wraps. This makes it suitable for weekly use on sealed vehicles – in contrast to alkaline pre-cleaners, which can reduce the durability of the sealant with frequent use.
What happens if SONAX ActiFoam Energy dries on the paint?
Dried foam leaves residues that are difficult to remove – especially at temperatures above 25 °C and in direct sunlight. Therefore, work in sections and keep the dwell time to a maximum of five minutes. Apply to a dry car body, but do not let it dry. In hot weather, it helps to briefly move the vehicle into the shade beforehand.
How economical is SONAX ActiFoam Energy?
With a dosage of 60 ml per pre-wash via a foam lance, one liter is sufficient for 15 to 20 applications. This corresponds to a cost of about 0.80 Euros per wash for the 1-liter container. With the 5-liter canister, the price drops to approximately 0.42 Euros per application – enough for over a year of weekly use.
Application of SONAX ActiFoam Energy
From foam lance to rinsing in five minutes
First, roughly rinse the vehicle with a high-pressure cleaner to remove loose sand and coarse dirt. Then fill the foam lance with ActiFoam Energy in a ratio of 1:10 to 1:15 — 50 to 80 ml of concentrate per liter of total volume. Apply to the dry (not wet) bodywork, working from bottom to top, so that the foam does not run down prematurely and leave areas untreated.
The exposure time is two to five minutes. During this time, the active foam chemically dissolves bound road grime, insect residue, and light flash rust. Do not leave on for longer than five minutes — the surfactants are saturated after this time, and waiting longer will not provide additional cleaning power. Use the waiting time to simultaneously treat the rims with a dedicated rim cleaner.
Then rinse thoroughly with the high-pressure cleaner — this time from top to bottom, so that the loosened dirt flows downwards and does not run over already rinsed surfaces. After rinsing, the actual contact wash with a wash mitt and car shampoo using the two-bucket method follows. ActiFoam Energy does not replace this contact wash but makes it safer.
In a pump sprayer (15–25 ml per liter of water), ActiFoam Energy is particularly suitable for targeted areas: wheel arches, door rebates, fuel filler caps, front end with insect infestation. For hand washing shampoo, add 50–80 ml to 10 liters of warm water and work with a wash mitt.
Notes: Do not use on hot surfaces or in direct sunlight — the foam will dry and leave difficult-to-remove residues. When temperatures are above 25 °C, work in sections. Warm water (30–40 °C) in the foam lance significantly improves the cleaning effect. Store the concentrate in a frost-free place. The typical energy drink scent is deliberately chosen as a work companion — pleasant in enclosed garages, but a matter of taste.
